From the top of its 52 meters, the Goury lighthouse, built between 1834 and 1837, guides the sailors in these very dangerous waters. It is located at the tip of the Cap de La Hague and signals the Blanchard Raz, one of the strongest tidal currents in Europe. Its construction was decided after numerous shipwrecks at this location. In the 1950s, my great-grandfather was a caretaker on this small island isolated from the continent for more than 10 years. Despite the short distance from the coast, it was very difficult to get there and return, so the guards lived there for a good part of the year.
